Romania's postwar coinage reform was slow and politically contentious — Ferdinand I had been king since 1914, but a unified national coinage reflecting the enlarged Romania after the 1918 acquisitions of Transylvania, Bukovina, and Bessarabia took years to materialize. Pattern strikes like this 1922 piece were part of the process of settling on acceptable designs and alloys before committing to full production runs. Copper-nickel was under active consideration as an alternative to the debased wartime issues.
KM#Pn193 never proceeded to circulation. The 5 Lei denomination would eventually be struck in different metal entirely.
