Dimitrie Cantemir — prince of Moldavia twice over, Ottoman hostage, Russian ally, and ultimately an exile in St. Petersburg — is one of the few early modern rulers whose intellectual output genuinely outlasted his political career. His Descriptio Moldaviae and Historia Incrementorum atque Decrementorum Aulae Othomanicae earned him election to the Berlin Academy of Sciences in 1714, making him the first Romanian to hold such a distinction.
This issue belongs to Romania's long-running commemorative silver program marking national cultural figures. Cantemir's fateful alliance with Peter the Great at the 1711 Battle of Stănilești ended in Ottoman victory and permanent exile.
