Latvia's return to the Lats after fifty years of Soviet occupation was never going to be straightforward. The 1992 series was prepared well before formal reintroduction — the Latvian rublis served as a transitional currency while the new notes were produced — and Giesecke & Devrient's Leipzig facility was an unusual choice, being the former East German plant absorbed into the firm after reunification rather than G&D's established Munich operation.

Ošiņš and Žodžiks also handled design work across the broader restoration series. The security provision here is notably sparse — watermark only, with none of the later additions that would appear on subsequent issues.
