Vakhtang I Gorgasali, who ruled Kartli in the late 5th century, is credited with founding Tbilisi — according to Georgian tradition, after a hunting falcon pursued a pheasant into a hot spring, prompting the king to relocate his capital to the site. The epithet "Gorgasali" derives from the Persian gorg (wolf) and asal (lion), a name reportedly given by the Sasanian court.
Georgia's commemorative silver program has issued selectively, and the 2022 Gorgasali piece fits a pattern of honoring pre-medieval dynastic figures rather than modern historical events.
