The lari was reintroduced on 2 October 1995, replacing the interim coupon currency that had circulated since Georgian independence — a coupon so worthless by the end that bread was priced in the millions. The stabilization was engineered largely under IMF guidance following years of civil conflict and hyperinflation that had gutted the Georgian economy after the Soviet collapse.

Gold commemoratives of this type from the National Bank of Georgia are struck in very limited numbers, typically under 500 pieces, though official mintage figures for this issue have not yet been widely published.
