The lari was reintroduced on October 2, 1995, replacing the short-lived coupon — a provisional currency Georgia had used since 1993 after severing ties with the Soviet ruble. The coupon lost roughly 90% of its value within its first year of circulation, making the lari's arrival a genuine stabilization event rather than a ceremonial one. This 2025 commemorative marks three decades since that transition.
