Muhammad Fareed Didi ruled the Maldives as its last sultan, deposed in 1968 when a republic was declared by referendum — making this issue one of the final coinage series to bear his name. The Maldives had briefly experimented with a republic from 1953 to 1954 before restoring the sultanate, and Fareed Didi's reign carried that instability throughout. Coins struck across this decade were produced in modest quantities for an isolated island economy with limited cash transaction tradition, where cowrie shells had served as currency well into the twentieth century.
