Malawi's wildlife coinage of the 1990s was produced largely for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation — the 5 Kwacha face value was nominal against the coin's silver content, and no Malawian household was spending these. The series was part of a broader wave of sub-Saharan commemorative issues marketed through European and American dealers during that decade, when several small nations licensed their minting rights to generate foreign currency revenue.
