Additional information

The Maria Theresia Thaler is one of the most extraordinary monetary anomalies in history — a coin that never stopped being minted in its original 1780 form, struck continuously by the Austrian mint and later by mints in London, Bombay, Brussels, and Rome to supply Arabian Peninsula and East African trade networks that refused any substitute. This Malawian issue is a miniature tribute piece rather than a circulating restrike, produced during the mid-2000s vogue for fractional novelty coins referencing classic types.

The Schön 118.5 designation places it firmly in the collector-issue category with no pretense of trade utility.
