The inscription commemorates the disaster of Publius Quinctilius Varus and his three lost legions. A Latin legend referencing the Varian disaster and the cry of Augustus arcs around the design, with the Roman date MMIX and the designation A.D. also present in the field. |

Marcus Caelius, a first centurion of Legio XVIII, is known almost entirely because of a single funerary stele — discovered near Xanten, Germany — erected by his brother after his death in the ambush of 9 AD. The inscription specifies he fell "bello Variano," in the war of Varus, making it one of the few contemporary epigraphic references to the Teutoburg disaster. Three full legions were annihilated; Augustus reportedly beat his head against a wall crying for Varus to return them.
Malawi's numismatic program from this period issued heavily into the collector novelty market, with minimal connection to national history.
