The P#30 series was introduced as part of a broader re-denomination effort following Malawi's shift away from the fixed exchange rate that had propped up the kwacha through the late 1980s. By 1994–95, the currency had been floated and the kwacha lost value sharply against the dollar, which made the 5 Kwacha a note of increasingly marginal purchasing power even at issue.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement in Malawian currency production stretches back to independence-era issues, making this a continuation of a long printing relationship rather than a new contract.
