5 Kuna Litokarton, Osijek

Litokarton was a cardboard and packaging manufacturer in Osijek, not a bank. During the currency chaos of late 1991 and early 1992, as Croatia struggled to detach from Yugoslav monetary structures and the dinar collapsed in purchasing power, several Croatian municipalities and even private enterprises issued their own emergency scrip to keep local commerce moving. Litokarton simply printed its own.

The note was signed by Vladimir Velki, almost certainly a company director rather than any monetary authority. That a packaging firm was authorizing circulating currency tells you something about how completely the normal financial infrastructure had broken down in eastern Slavonia at that moment — Osijek was under sustained Serbian artillery bombardment throughout this period.
