Iceland's adoption of the new króna series in 1981 followed a 1980 redenomination that replaced the old króna at 100:1 — one of several monetary resets the country undertook across the twentieth century as chronic inflation repeatedly eroded purchasing power. The copper-nickel 5 krónur ran concurrently for a period with an otherwise identical magnetic variant, the two distinguishable only by magnet test, a distinction that matters for vending machine collectors and series completists alike.
