Additional information

The Faroese coin series, introduced in 1941 when German occupation of Denmark severed normal monetary supply lines, was issued specifically to prevent British-occupied Faroe Islands from circulating Danish coins bearing a swastika-marked king's portrait. The series has been maintained and periodically updated ever since as a distinct Faroese identity — legally Danish currency, politically something else entirely.

The 2011 issues continued the fish-themed redesign series that began rolling out from the late 1990s onward, each denomination assigned its own marine species specific to Faroese waters.
