Opschrift voorzijde CARL XVI Gustaf 20 16 EN SVERIGES KONUNG
(Translation: King of Sweden)
Beschrijving keerzijde The central field displays the word 'SVERIGE' in bold incuse lettering across the middle, beneath which the numeral '5' is rendered in a stylised form integrated with a curved wave motif. Above and below the country name, a pattern of stylised arching waves fills the field, evoking Sweden's maritime heritage. Three heraldic crowns — the Tre Kronor, Sweden's national emblem — are depicted at the top of the design in a triangular arrangement. The denomination legend 'KRONOR' is inscribed along the lower arc, with the mint mark letters 'S' and 'SI' flanking the crowns in the upper field.

Aanvullende informatie

Sweden's shift to Nordic gold for its 5 kronor coinage was driven by practical economics rather than tradition — the alloy's resistance to counterfeiting and its distinctive color made it attractive to several Scandinavian mints simultaneously, and Sweden adopted it as part of a broader recoinage that also trimmed the physical size of the coin. By 2016, the series was well into its revised format introduced with the 2016 coin reform, which eliminated the 1 and 2 kronor denominations entirely and reset the physical specifications across the range.

The 2016 reform was the most significant restructuring of Swedish coinage since decimalization adjustments decades prior.
