This coin marks the centenary of Norges Bank's banknote monopoly, consolidated in 1892 when the bank gained exclusive rights to issue paper currency across Norway. Olav V died in January 1991, just months after this coin entered circulation, making it one of the final issues bearing his effigy before the Harald V transition.
