Pattern coinage from the Royal Danish Mint rarely surfaces in commerce, and this 1984 type IIIa trial represents one of several competing designs evaluated before the final circulating 5 Krone specification was settled. The designation "type IIIa" implies at least a second variant of the third design iteration — meaning the selection process was neither quick nor simple. Mintage figures for Danish patterns of this period are essentially undocumented in standard references, as official trial pieces were not released through normal channels.
