5 Kroner Grønlands Styrelse. Type II, no pattern outside frame

Grønlands Styrelse — the Danish colonial administration of Greenland — issued this series during the final stages of the German occupation of Denmark, when normal fiscal channels between Copenhagen and Greenland were severed. The notes were a practical workaround for a territory that had been functionally cut off from its metropolitan authority since 1940, with the United States assuming informal protection of the island under the Hall agreement of that year.

The Type II designation distinguishes this from the earlier Type I by the absence of the decorative pattern outside the frame border — a simplified printing decision, not an error. Both types were produced at Danmarks Nationalbanks Seddeltrykeri, though their distribution to Greenland was complicated by wartime Atlantic shipping conditions.
