The Oesterreichisch-ungarische Bank issued this note in the final year of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's existence — by November 1918 the empire had ceased to exist entirely. Notes of this series were inherited by the successor states and remained technically valid in several of them, but individual governments quickly moved to overprint or perforate their inherited stocks to prevent currency arbitrage across the new borders. Unmodified examples circulated in the transitional chaos before national currencies were properly established.
The P#22 5 Kronen is one of the more common survivals from the series, given the volume printed. Wartime paper quality varies noticeably across print runs.
