Aschach an der Donau housed Russian and later Italian prisoners during the First World War, and the camp scrip issued there — printed by Haas & Comp. in nearby Steyr — was a practical solution to a persistent problem: preventing PoWs from accumulating Austro-Hungarian currency they could use to bribe guards or fund escape attempts. The Lagermarken system was mandated across k.u.k. camps by 1915, and Aschach's notes conform to that broader administrative framework.
Campbell 1318 is not a rare denomination within the series, but surviving examples in any condition are genuinely uncommon — camp scrip was rarely preserved by anyone with reason to keep it.
