Rozsnyó — today Rožňava in southern Slovakia — was a mining town in the Hungarian highlands with a history of silver extraction going back to the medieval period. This 1860 municipal necessity note belongs to a wave of locally issued small-denomination paper that filled the gap left by the chronic shortage of low-value metallic currency across the Habsburg crownlands, a problem that worsened significantly after the financial disruptions of 1848–49 and never fully resolved before the Ausgleich era.
The sole security measure was an official municipal stamp — no complex printing, no serial numbering in any sophisticated sense. Acceptance depended entirely on local trust in the town treasury. These scrip issues rarely traveled far, which is precisely why survivorship is so uneven.
