Joseph II launched a sweeping coinage reform in 1786 that rationalized the Habsburg monetary system along Enlightenment principles of decimal efficiency — a project very much in keeping with his broader administrative overhaul of the empire. The 5 Kreuzer was one of the smaller denominations introduced under this scheme, struck across multiple mint facilities including Vienna, Kremnitz, and Günzburg, which accounts for the mint mark variations catalogued under Herinek 317 and 318.
Joseph died in February 1790, cutting the issue short after just three years of production.
