Hieronymus von Colloredo ruled Salzburg as an ardent Josephinist, pushing Enlightenment-driven church reforms that made him one of the most despised figures in the archbishopric's history. His relationship with the Mozart family was famously antagonistic — Wolfgang resigned his court position under Colloredo in 1781 in circumstances that ended, according to Leopold's mortified letters, with a literal kick from the archbishop's chief steward.
