Charles Alexander of Lorraine served as Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 1761 until his death in 1780, governing the Order's remaining territorial holdings in the Holy Roman Empire at a moment when the institution had long since shed any military function and operated primarily as a sovereign ecclesiastical landowner. The 1776 coinage was struck under the Konventionsfuß monetary standard established by the Austro-Bavarian convention of 1753, to which the Order adhered as a matter of political alignment with Vienna — Charles Alexander was himself a Habsburg prince, brother of Emperor Francis I.
Prokisch's census of Teutonic Order coinage identifies this as variety 250a, suggesting at least one additional die pairing exists for this type.
