The Azerbaijan People's Government was a Soviet-backed separatist regime that held Tabriz and much of Iranian Azerbaijan from late 1945 until December 1946, when Iranian army forces, emboldened by American diplomatic pressure and Soviet withdrawal, retook the province. Ja'far Pishevari's administration issued its own currency during those twelve months — a direct assertion of administrative independence from Tehran. The republic collapsed so quickly that its banknotes saw almost no sustained circulation; the whole series was effectively dead within a year of printing.
The P#S101 designation reflects its status as a local or insurgent issue rather than a recognized national emission.
