Hungary's 1907 coronation replica issues were authorized to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Francis Joseph I's 1867 Ausgleich coronation as King of Hungary — the political compromise that created the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy. Struck in nickel rather than silver, these were never intended as circulating currency but as accessible commemorative pieces distributed to mark the occasion.
KM#492 is frequently misidentified in collections as a struck restrike of the silver 5 Korona type, but the nickel composition confirms its distinct commemorative purpose from inception.
