Fegyver és Gépgyár — the state arms and munitions works on Soroksári út — issued this note during the chaotic monetary collapse that followed the proclamation of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in March 1919. Factory-issued emergency money, or szükségpénz, proliferated across Hungary that spring and summer as the Kun government struggled to maintain any coherent monetary supply. This piece is one of several denominations issued by the plant for wage payments to its own workers.
The issuer's identity is itself historically loaded: the factory had been central to Austro-Hungarian arms production throughout the First World War, and by 1919 was operating under workers' council administration.
