Khengarji III ruled Kutch for over six decades — one of the longest reigns of any princely state ruler — and his coinage reflects the gradual tightening of British oversight throughout that period. The 5 Kori was the backbone of Kutch's local silver currency, circulating widely across the Rann and into the Kathiawar trade networks. This 1876 issue dates to the years immediately following the Gaekwad succession crisis in neighboring Baroda, when British paramountcy over the western Indian states was being aggressively reasserted.
The .937 fineness is notably higher than contemporary British Indian coinage, a specification Kutch maintained through long-standing local minting tradition rather than imperial mandate.
