The Chuvash Republic series belongs to Russia's ongoing regional collector program launched in 2002, which has issued bimetallic 10-ruble coins by the hundreds — but these smaller kopek-denomination pieces tied to specific republics occupy an ambiguous space in that program's history. By 2013, the 5-kopek coin had been functionally worthless in everyday commerce for years, its purchasing power effectively zero, yet the mint continued striking them through 2014 before the denomination was quietly abandoned in circulation.
