Vneshtorgbank's military trade cheques occupy a genuinely strange corner of Soviet monetary history. Issued specifically for use in Voenторг (military trade) stores — closed-network retail outlets serving Soviet armed forces personnel — they formed part of a broader parallel currency system designed to extract hard-currency-equivalent purchasing power without actually disbursing foreign exchange. The red overprint bond distinguished this series from the standard blue-bond cheques used in civilian Beryozka shops.
Personnel serving abroad, particularly in Warsaw Pact postings and advisory missions in Africa and the Middle East, received portions of their compensation in these instruments rather than rubles. The separation was deliberate: it restricted where and how that income could be spent, keeping it within state-controlled retail channels.
