The "7 orbits" designation refers to the seven raised ridges ringing the inner field on the reverse — a detail that distinguishes this type from the later reworked dies and has made it the collector shorthand for the entire 1926–1935 run. Production spanned the first two Soviet Five-Year Plans, a period when the state was simultaneously dismantling the NEP mixed economy and demanding metals for industrialization, creating periodic pressure on non-ferrous coinage supply. Aluminium bronze was itself a deliberate choice, adopted across the Soviet small-denomination series to conserve copper for industrial use.
