The XV Pacific Games were hosted by Port Moresby in 2015 — the first time Papua New Guinea had hosted the event since its inaugural edition in 1963. Over 4,000 athletes from 24 nations competed across 30 sports, making it the largest Pacific Games to that point. The Bank of Papua New Guinea issued this coin as an official commemorative, a practice consistent with Pacific nations using major regional sporting events to generate collector revenue rather than circulating currency.
