The 5 Kina gold series from the Bank of Papua New Guinea targets the bullion collector market rather than domestic circulation — these pieces were never intended as spending money. KM#58 is one of several denomination variants in the Bird of Paradise bullion programme, which draws on imagery long associated with PNG's national identity — the bird appears on the national flag and has been a recurring motif on PNG coinage since independence in 1975.
