The kina was introduced on 19 April 1975, replacing the Australian dollar at par ahead of independence — an unusual sequence, since Papua New Guinea didn't formally become independent until September of that year. This commemorative marks the currency's silver anniversary. Mekere Morauta's signature here is that of the Prime Minister, not a central bank official, which was an uncommon choice for the series and reflects the political weight the government attached to the occasion.
Note Printing Australia, the Reserve Bank of Australia's printing subsidiary, has handled Papua New Guinea's notes since the kina's inception.
