China's grain rationing system, administered through a network of county-level bureaus, generated thousands of local commodity stamps in denominations tied to weight rather than currency. This Luyi County example from Anhui's grain distribution network belongs to that sprawling mid-1980s infrastructure — a period when the central government was gradually dismantling unified grain procurement while local bureaus still maintained parallel coupon systems to manage coarse grain allocations separately from fine grain quotas.
Luyi is better known as the birthplace of Laozi, but these stamps have nothing philosophical about them. Coarse grain designations typically covered sorghum, millet, and corn — lower-status staples tracked separately from wheat and rice in most Anhui counties through at least the early 1990s.
