Beschrijving voorzijde A central vignette presents a large hydroelectric dam with water cascading dramatically from its spillways, set against a mountainous landscape rendered in fine intaglio line work. The bank title 中國人民銀行 appears in the upper guilloche border, flanked by the denomination 伍角 at both upper corners. To the right, the denomination is repeated within an ornate oval cartouche with scrollwork surround, while two red seal impressions appear in the lower central area alongside the year inscription 一九五三年 in the bottom border panel.

Beschrijving keerzijde The central design is built around a stepped, architecturally framed panel containing the bank name and denomination in Chinese, flanked by the same text rendered in Mongolian, Uyghur (Arabic script), and Tibetan scripts. The national coat of arms of the People's Republic of China — Tiananmen Gate surmounted by five stars within a wreath of grain — is positioned at the top centre above the multilingual panel. Oval guilloche medallions carrying the denomination 伍角 in Chinese appear at both the left and right margins, and the year 1953 is set in a cartouche at the base of the central vignette.

Opmerkingen

This denomination was part of the second series of Renminbi, which China could not print domestically in sufficient volume during the early 1950s — Goznak in Moscow produced several of the second series notes under a Sino-Soviet technical cooperation arrangement. The relationship was close enough that Soviet engravers had direct input on the intaglio work, which is visible in the finished quality.

When Sino-Soviet relations collapsed after 1960, the printing plates and technical files held in Moscow became a politically sensitive matter. China did not publicly acknowledge Goznak's involvement for decades.
