Whitsunday — Zeleni Sviata in Ukrainian — is a Slavic observance layered over Pentecost, retaining pre-Christian elements tied to ancestor veneration and the return of spring vegetation. Ukraine's commemorative hryvnia series of the early 2000s systematically documented folk calendar traditions that had been suppressed or distorted during the Soviet period, when such religious-agrarian customs were either banned outright or reframed as secular folklore. This coin belongs to that recovery project.

The "German silver" designation is a misnomer inherited from 19th-century metallurgy — the alloy contains no silver whatsoever.
