Ukraine's lunar series coins were issued under a National Bank mandate to capture collector export revenue during a period when hard currency reserves were under sustained pressure. The 2012 dragon issue corresponds to the Chinese lunisolar calendar year beginning January 23rd of that year. Ukraine has no indigenous dragon tradition of particular numismatic relevance here — the series is straightforwardly aimed at diaspora and Asian collector markets.
KM#645 was struck at the Kyiv mint to proof standard with a low authorized mintage typical of the series run.
