Yulian Shpol was the pseudonym of Mykhailo Yalovy, a Ukrainian prose writer and literary organizer associated with the "executed renaissance" — the generation of Ukrainian cultural figures systematically arrested, shot, or driven to suicide by Soviet authorities primarily during the purges of the late 1920s and 1930s. Yalovy was arrested in 1933 and executed in 1937. The broader campaign effectively decapitated Ukrainian literary culture for a generation.

This coin belongs to Ukraine's ongoing commemorative series dedicated to that destroyed cohort. The series has taken on renewed political weight since 2022.
