Additional information

The Dormition Cathedral in Volodymyr-Volynskyi is among the oldest surviving stone churches in Ukraine, founded in the 12th century under Prince Mstislav of Volhynia and later heavily restored in the 1880s under Russian imperial patronage — a restoration controversial enough that it altered much of the original Romanesque character of the structure. The city itself, known as Volodymyr or Ladomir in medieval sources, served as the seat of the Volhynian principality and was one of the more consequential urban centers in Kievan Rus' before Mongol incursions diminished its regional standing.
