St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery in Kyiv was demolished by Soviet authorities in 1936 — dynamited as part of a systematic campaign to erase Ukrainian religious and cultural identity. This coin was struck just seven years after independence, while reconstruction of the cathedral was actively underway; the rebuilt structure was consecrated in 1999, the year after this issue.
The Zahreba reference places it among early post-Soviet Ukrainian coinage, a period when the National Bank was still establishing its commemorative series conventions.
