The obverse features a stylized cartographic rendering of the Sea of Azov and the adjacent Ukrainian coastal territory, depicted in relief through a series of horizontal lines imitating sea waves. The denomination '5₴' appears in the field alongside the issuer inscription 'УКРАЇНА' and the date '2025'. Bilingual legends arc around the design, reading 'АЗОВСЬКЕ МОРЕ' in Cyrillic and 'THE SEA OF AZOV' in Latin script. The overall composition combines geographic imagery with an artistic wave motif, rendered in a modern numismatic style. |

The reverse presents a detailed polychrome depiction of two round gobies (Neogobius melanostomus) in their natural aquatic habitat, resting upon a sandy-silty substrate strewn with rocky fragments and aquatic vegetation. The foreground prominently features a clutch of eggs, underscoring the species' reproductive biology and ecological significance. The design is rendered in a naturalistic style with colour applied to enhance the lifelike rendering of the fish and their environment. The Cyrillic legend 'БИЧОК-КРУГЛЯК' and the scientific binomial 'NEOGOBIUS MELANOSTOMUS' in Latin script are inscribed across the reverse field. |

The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) has become one of the more ecologically disruptive invasive species in European freshwater and brackish systems, spreading aggressively through the Black Sea basin and into the Baltic via ballast water discharge since the 1990s. Ukraine's choice to commemorate it is a pointed one — this is a native Black Sea species being celebrated in its home range, before the broader conversation about its invasiveness elsewhere complicated its reputation entirely.
