Issued to mark the centenary of the Red Cross Society of Ukraine, which was formally established in 1918 during an extraordinarily turbulent moment — the country was simultaneously navigating the end of World War I, the collapse of the Russian Empire, and a violent struggle for independence that would consume the next several years. The Ukrainian Red Cross operated with considerable autonomy during that brief window of statehood before Soviet absorption effectively subordinated it to the USSR's Red Cross and Red Crescent structure.
The National Bank of Ukraine has issued commemoratives on this theme across multiple formats; this circulating commemorative in nickel brass targets general distribution rather than collector sets.
