Ivan Marchuk is one of Ukraine's most internationally exhibited living artists, known for a painting technique he calls "pliontanism" — a layered, thread-like application of paint he developed independently beginning in the 1960s while working under the constraints of Soviet artistic doctrine, which classified his experimental work as ideologically suspect. The KGB monitored him for years. This coin commemorates both the artist and the method, an unusual move for a national mint more accustomed to honoring historical figures long dead.
