Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a richly composed commemorative scene honouring the 250th anniversary of the Astronomical Observatory of Lviv University. To the left, a bust portrait of an 18th-century astronomer is depicted in three-quarter view, the figure holding a small sextant to his face in the act of celestial observation. To the right, a detailed architectural rendering of the observatory building is shown, its Baroque facade rendered with careful attention to fenestration and decorative detail, flanked by the stylised spires of Lviv's historic skyline rising into the upper field. Decorative star motifs are scattered throughout the background. The curved legend АСТРОНОМІЧНА ОБСЕРВАТОРІЯ ЛЬВІВСЬКОГО УНІВЕРСИТЕТУ runs along the upper rim, while the anniversary inscription 250 РОКІВ is prominently displayed in the lower field.

Aanvullende informatie

The Lviv Astronomical Observatory, founded in 1769 under the Jesuit-run university, is one of the oldest continuously operating observatories in Eastern Europe. It survived the partitions of Poland, the collapse of the Habsburg Empire, two world wars, and Soviet reorganization — each regime finding the facility too scientifically useful to destroy. The observatory is particularly associated with work on variable stars and positional astronomy conducted through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Ukraine's commemorative bimetallic and base-metal collector series has issued dozens of institutional subjects since the late 1990s, with Zahreba cataloguing the steady expansion of that program.
