Ukraine issued its first postage stamps in 1918, during the brief window of independence afforded by the Ukrainian People's Republic before Bolshevik consolidation of the region. Those stamps — featuring a trident design — were produced under chaotic wartime conditions, with perforations and paper quality varying wildly across printings. The centennial of that issue prompted this coin.
The Zahreba catalog reference places this firmly within the commemorative 5 hryvnia series that the National Bank deployed aggressively through the 2010s to mark Ukrainian cultural and historical milestones — a program that produced dozens of issues within a single decade.
