| Additional information |
Cold Yar — Kholodnyi Yar in Ukrainian — is a forested ravine system in Cherkasy Oblast that served as the operational base for one of the most tenacious Ukrainian insurgent armies of the early 1920s. The Chornyi Lis detachment and affiliated units held the territory against Bolshevik forces well into 1922, long after organized resistance had collapsed elsewhere. Soviet authorities found the terrain nearly impossible to pacify, and the campaign against Cold Yar partisans required repeated large-scale military operations.
The site was effectively erased from Soviet historiography for decades. This commemorative issue is part of the NBU's ongoing series celebrating places of Ukrainian historical memory.
