Issued to mark the 1025th anniversary of the Christianization of Kyivan Rus, a state conversion traditionally dated to 988 AD when Volodymyr the Great ordered the mass baptism of Kyiv's population in the Dnipro River. The event was less a grassroots spiritual shift than a calculated political alignment with Byzantium, cemented by Volodymyr's marriage to the Byzantine princess Anna — a union Constantinople agreed to only on condition of his baptism.
Ukraine and Russia both claim this conversion as a founding moment of their respective national identities, a tension that makes commemoratives on this theme quietly contentious. The 2013 issue date places it one year before the Maidan revolution.
