| Additional information |
Chernihiv is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, with settlement evidence predating the Rus' period by centuries. The city served as the capital of the medieval Chernigov Principality and holds some of the best-preserved Romanesque-influenced architecture in the former Soviet space — several churches dating to the 11th and 12th centuries survive largely intact. Ukraine's regional commemorative 5 hryvnia series, of which this is part, ran through the mid-2000s and covered all of Ukraine's historic oblasts in bimetallic and nickel-brass formats.
