Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi — known to the ancient Greeks as Tyras and to the Ottomans as Akkerman — has changed hands more times than perhaps any city in the Black Sea region. The 2000 coin series marking Ukrainian historic cities was issued as part of a broader post-independence project to anchor regional identity in a national numismatic narrative, with each denomination tied to a specific city of historical weight. Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi's inclusion was almost inevitable given the Akkerman Fortress, one of the largest surviving medieval fortifications in Eastern Europe, built primarily in the 13th and 14th centuries by the Principality of Moldavia.
